21st Annual Magkaisa Filipino American Student Parent High School Conference

Otay Ranch High School hosted the Magkaisa Conference 2023 last October 28, 2023.  This is the 21st Anniversary of Magkaisa Filipino American Student and Parent Conference: Keeping our Culture and Identity Alive Through Art.  


True to its theme, this conference provided workshops  that focus on careers in the field of art and Filipino culture and traditions. For example, Jo Ann Atwood shared her path as a tattoo artist. Also, Dr. Catherine Sy Luib introduced Filipino Medicine and native “Hilot”, which is an ancient Philippine healing.  Furthermore, even youths were empowered to speak  and share their experiences such as AJ Miranda who spoke about discovering his roots as Filipino-American through film making. 


Kenneth Barlis, a fashion designer, was the keynote speaker. His accomplishments in the fashion industry inspired youth to express their creativity and passion.


The highlights of this conference was the Philippine Festivals.  Different Highs schools in the Sweetwater District participated namely:

  1. Eastlake High School and Eastlake Middle School - MassKara Festival

  2. Mar Vista High School - Manggahan Festival

  3. Montgomery High School - Sublian (Dance) Festival

  4. Olympian High School - Panagbenga

  5. Otay Ranch High School - Kadayawan Festival

  6. Sweetwater High School - Pintados Festival

“Dalawang Baybayin/Two Shores”, a Virtual intercultural Exchange Program a Success!

The Council for Teaching Filipino Language and Culture (CTFLC) and San Diego County Office of Education (SDCOE) held its virtual Closing Program for the Dalawang Baybayin/Two Shores, a Virtual Intercultural Exchange Program this year on May 20 & 21, 2022, both San Diego and Philippines via Zoom. Two countries, the Philippines and the United States, worked for seven months.  The project started with a virtual kickoff on October 15, 2021.  The project was participated in by schools from the Philippines and schools from Sweetwater Union High School District, San Diego Unified School District, and Poway Unified School District.  The schools from San Diego were Bonita Vista, Eastlake High School, Eastlake Middle, Olympian High School, Otay Ranch High School, and Sweetwater High School.  These schools are from Sweetwater Union High School District.  From Poway Unified School district were Mr. Carmel High School and Westview High School.  From the San Diego Unified School district were Ch
