CTFLC Represented at 3rd International Confab

The 3rd International Conference on Filipino As a Global Language was successfully held on August 3-5, 2012 at the College of St. Benilde International Conference, De La Salle University, Manila with the theme: “Filipino Language and Culture: Issues and Challenges for the 21st Century” (Ang Wika at Kulturang Filipino: Iba’t Ibang Isyu at Hamon ng Siglo 21). This was sponsored by the Global Consortium for the Advancement of Filipino Language and Culture(GLOCAFIL) under Dr. Ruth Elynia S. Mabanglo and the Pambansang Samahan sa Linggwistika at Literaturang Filipino(PSLLF) headed by Dr. Teresita F. Fortunato, with the collaboration of the Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

More than fifty (50) papers were presented by about 230 scholars, writers, educators, historians, media specialists, and language/culture enthusiasts coming from the different parts of the region in the Philippines and delegates from USA, Japan, Brunei, Paris, and Malaysia. The Council for Teaching Filipino Language and Culture (CTFLC) supported the participation of its Founding President, Dr. Cristeta M. Dumaran and Board Director Dr. Atilio V. Alicio.  Along with Ms. Ivy Dulay, an M.A. Graduate Student in Dual Language Development at the California State University Long Beach who presented her paper on “Can You Speak Filipino? The Filipino Language in the U.S.”, Dr. Alicio, Lecturer in Filipino at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) and San Diego State University (SDSU), presented a paper on “California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET): Filipino.”

Three (3) Plenary Sessions covered the following topics with the corresponding speakers: Session 1 - “Kasalukuyang Kalagayan ng Filipino sa Pilipinas”: Dr. Yolanda Quijano (DepEd); Dr. Catherine Castañeda (CHED); Dr. Isagani Cruz (Manila Times College at DLSU-Manila); and Dr. Mary Grace Ampil-Tirona, Undersecretary and Executive Director, Commission on Filipino Overseas (COF); Session 2 - “Istatus at Hamon sa Wikang Filipino sa Labas ng Pilipinas”: Dr. Robert Bley-Vroman, Dean of the College of Languages, Linguistics and Literature, University of Hawaii-Manoa; Dr. Vicente L. Rafael, Dept. of History, University of Washington; and Dr. Teresita V. Ramos, Professor Emeritus, Dept. of Indo-Pacific Language and Literature, University of Hawaii-Manoa; and Session 3 - “Ang Tungkulin ng Media sa Pagpapalaganap ng Wikang Filipino bilang Pambansa/Global na Wika”: Dr. Nicanor G. Tiongson, Professor Emeritus, University of the Philippines; and Dr. Ruth Elynia S. Mabanglo and Dr. Aurora E. Batnag of GLOCAFIL.

This is the 3rd International Conference on Filipino As a Global Language with the 1st held in March 2008 (Hawaii), and the 2nd was in January 2010  (San Diego) as organized by CTFLC under its President Rosalina V. Idos.
