Filipina Friday

Last June 10, 2016, Saturday, 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM, the Filipino-American Chamber of Commerce of San Diego County highlighted the initiative and achievements of 10 Outstanding Filipina Women at The Filipino School.  These extraordinary individuals contributed in the fields of arts, culture, health, media, education, and community.  This special event was now known as San Diego’s first-ever Filipina Friday.  

Francine Maigue, President, and CEO of FilAmChamber described them as “giving, remarkable, compassionate women in San Diego.”  She added, “They are the pillars of strengths.  They are the source of inspiration.  They do it never for the glory but sheer “bayanihan.”  Indeed, they are Filipino she-roes.

Three of these 10 awardees are from Council for Teaching Filipino Language and Culture (CTFLC), namely:

  • Mrs. Jacquiline Magat-Lapid, President of CTFLC and Filipino Language Teacher at Bell Middle School – Outstanding Filipina Leader Award in Education
  • Mrs. Grace Almazar, Filipino Language Teacher at Olympian High School – Outstanding Filipina Leader Award in Education
  • Ms. Carole Caparros, CTFLC Treasurer and Administrative Manager of The Filipino School – Outstanding Filipina Leader Award in Culture

Other awardees are the following:

  • Ms. Thalia Rose Maigue-Bendorf - Outstanding Filipina Leader Award (Youth and Health
  • Ms. Julia “Jhigs” Legaspi - Outstanding Filipina Leader Award (CommUNITY)
  • Ms. Maria Arcega-Dunn - Outstanding Filipina Leader Award (Media)
  • Ms. Myrna Fariñas Reyes – Outstanding Filipina Leader Award (Civic Engagement)
  • Ms. Michelle Aguilar Camaya - Outstanding Filipina Leader Award (Arts)
  • Ms. Cynthia Suero-Gabler - Outstanding Filipina Leader Award (Seniors)
  • Ms. June Marquez Olson - Outstanding Filipina Leader Award (Workers)
